I sit here as an Environmentalist,
In our Anthropocene,
Studying the damaging effects of capitalism,
Like our devastating dependence on gasoline. Pipelines reaching from coast to coast,
Polluting our basic necessities,
Earth, air, and water,
Turned into commodities.
Like the white man’s stomach isn’t already full, Feasting on other’s health hazardous misery,
He sinks his teeth in deeper,
Sucking us dry
And getting one more bloody victory.
Welcome to America,
Is this your American dream?
Turning people into profit,
And throwing them away like the plastic
That is clogging our rivers and streams.
The truth is every industry is guilty,
And contributes to the lack of care,
That is provided to our people and planet,
Suffering in their wrongdoings,
While they become millionaires.
We ask them to pay taxes
They say, “Well how much is that going to cost” –
I feel the world crumbling
As 150 species go extinct daily,
Resources and biodiversity becoming completely lost. How much time do we really have?
A question I ask myself everyday,
I wait for our inevitable demise,
Before picking myself up again, To say, “It’s time to organize”.
